Advocating for PEC’s South Shore at Nature on the Hill.
Cheryl Chapman, our dedicated Outdoor Educator at South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI), recently attended Nature Canada’s Nature on the Hill—a national event in Ottawa that brought together conservation leaders from across the country.

Through SSJI’s Wild Thing environmental education program and ongoing community outreach, Cheryl helped spotlight the importance of protecting Prince Edward County’s South Shore. She met with MP Chris Malette to share SSJI’s goals for conservation and restoration, emphasizing the ecological significance of this rare and undeveloped shoreline.
The meeting also included Adam Cheeseman of Nature New Brunswick, and British Columbia’s Charlotte Dawe of Ecojustice. MP Malette was asked to press the federal government to implement Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy—a key framework for protecting biodiversity nationwide.
This year’s Nature on the Hill, the seventh such gathering, was the largest yet, with 70 participants engaging in meetings with 45 Ministers, MPs, and Senators over two full days. A standout moment was the fireside chat with Minister Stephen Guilbeault, joined by Cheryl Bozarth Soll (Nature Alberta), Joshua Charleson (Coastal Restoration Society), and Janell Smith (Island Nature Trust), who shared powerful stories of grassroots conservation.
The event wrapped with a closing reception, where Minister Guilbeault and Secretary of State for Nature Nathalie Provost spoke candidly about the impact of these conversations, highlighting the momentum created by the participants’ collective efforts.
SSJI was honoured to be part of this national dialogue, bringing PEC’s South Shore to the heart of Canada’s nature advocacy movement.
