Is Spring Finally Here?
📝 📸 Dale Smith
As the Path Building Team began its first spring walk in early April, a Song Sparrow welcomed us with its unmistakable call. A fitting song of hope after a long winter.
Over the past month and a half, we’ve completed four walks through privately owned parcels along the South Shore that are being considered for the future path. Each visit has revealed new glimpses into the rich natural and cultural history of the area.

Among the highlights was the discovery of an old homestead, complete with a root cellar quietly tucked into the landscape as a reminder of the families and livelihoods that once shaped this shoreline. We also identified a turtle nesting area, an encouraging sign of the healthy habitat that continues to thrive here.

Spring wildlife has been making its presence known throughout our walks. We’ve watched snakes basking in the warm sunshine after cool nights and were delighted to spot a small Blanding’s turtle, a special sighting that underscores the ecological value of these lands.

With every step, the Path Building Team is reminded that this project is about more than creating a trail. It is about connecting people to the landscape, protecting important natural spaces, and preserving the stories that live along the South Shore.
If the Song Sparrow was right, spring has indeed arrived, bringing with it renewed energy, discovery, and optimism for the work ahead.
