International Monarch Monitoring Blitz
Sunday, July 28, 10 am
Hudgin House, 191 Ostrander Point Road
Thank you for registering for the Monarch Monitoring Blitz on Sunday, July 28. We will meet at the Hudgin House, 191 Ostrander Point Rd. at 10 am.
Parking is limited at the House, so if it is convenient, please consider carpooling. There is an opportunity to continue in the afternoon at the National Wildlife Area. You are invited to bring a picnic lunch and join a further Monarch Walk at Prince Edward Point.
Schedule:
10:00 to 11:00
- Display tables: Monarchs with Cheryl Chapman, South Shore Joint Initiative and South Shore Footpath with Geoff Craig.
- Merchandise sales: Monarch Life cycle T-shirts, SSJI Bucket Hats, 2024 Tea (Tree) towels, Species at Risk Guides, and Monarch caterpillar bracelets.
- Face painting.
11:00
- Introductions followed by walks – one towards the lake, one towards Babylon Rd, one along the ATV trail.
11:45
- Reconvene at Hudgin House. How many Monarchs (or Viceroys) did you document? How many caterpillars? Any eggs?
12:15
- Anyone wanting to continue to the NWA can bring a picnic lunch and join a further Monarch Walk.
We will provide drinking water, paper cups, and a portable toilet at the Hudgin House. If you require it, please bring a lawn chair. There are well-maintained pit toilets at the NWA and a couple of picnic tables (and excellent swimming off the rocky beach).
*Remember that ticks that cause Lyme disease are endemic in the County, and poison ivy is everywhere. Long pants and sturdy walking shoes are recommended. SSJI assumes no responsibility for your personal safety at our events.
