Advocacy Alert: Say NO to help curb Picton Terminals expansion

Picton Bay is 1km wide and the primary source of drinking water for 7,000+ residents. Prince Edward County has applied for a Ministerial Zoning Order “MZO” to rezone Picton Terminals.

If the government says YES…
If Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Paul Calandra issues an MZO, Picton Terminals will be able to:

  • Purchase up to 7 adjacent properties (currently zoned rural farmland) and get these lands rezoned to MX-Extractive (quarry). This would essentially double the size of their current operations.
  • Use container ships and store shipping containers up to 580-feet above sea level on Picton Bay adjacent lands.

If we say NO…
If the Minister says no to an MZO, the County’s court case will continue. The County Conservancy – a newly formed local advocacy group – believes approving an MZO would be extremely irresponsible because zoning approvals and environmental studies would not be required.

For The County to control its own destiny and retain control over land use rules, The County Conservancy encourages everyone to say NO to an MZO and sign a petition at Penny’s Pantry in Picton.

Note: Picton Terminals’ contract to become a bulk grain terminal port is allowed under current zoning and does not require the MZO. However, the County’s Settlement with Picton Terminals requires the MZO to be in place. The MZO is a result of Council’s narrow approval of Settlement Agreement with Picton Terminals behind closed doors without any public or Indigenous consultation.

Celebrating 80 Years of Impact:

Cheryl Anderson’s Birthday Fundraiser

This past month, we celebrated a remarkable milestone: Cheryl Anderson, SSJI's Vice President, turned 80! In honour of this special occasion, Cheryl's friends and colleagues chose to forgo traditional gifts. Instead, they contributed to a unique educational fund dedicated to supporting her beloved South Shore.

In a testament to Cheryl’s deep appreciation for nature and education, the fund will initiate the creation of a series of educational cards. These cards will highlight various taxa, including plants, insects, birds, and fish native to South Shore. The front of each card will feature stunning photography from local photographers or beautiful illustrations by talented local artists. The reverse side will include an informative description that will shed some light on the significance of each species.

Cheryl expressed her gratitude with heartfelt words, saying, “I appreciate this wonderful gift, which will contribute to SSJI's mission to preserve and protect Prince Edward County's South Shore, its many species, and waters.” Her passion for conservation and education continues to inspire those around her, making this initiative a perfect tribute to her work and legacy.

Keep an eye out for these beautiful cards, set to debut in 2025. They are sure to be a delightful way to connect with nature while supporting a cause that Cheryl holds dear. Here’s to many more years of safeguarding our pristine South Shore!

Legacy donation in honour of the late Laurie Gashinski (March 6, 1973 – July 15, 2024)

Laurie was a member of SSJI and the inaugural outdoor education teacher at Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf in Belleville. She passed away in July after a courageous battle with cancer.

The heartfelt contribution of $1,500, raised by her friends and colleagues at the School, will be directed to SSJI as requested.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Laurie's family and friends during this difficult time. Your support is greatly appreciated and will help continue Laurie's legacy and passion for outdoor education.
