Great news to start a New Year: as part of the 2024 ‘Movement for Good’ program, Ecclesiastical Insurance awarded South Shore Joint Initiative a $1000 grant!

We are sincerely grateful for this financial contribution, which will play a vital role in helping the South Shore Joint Initiative fulfill its mission of preserving the natural beauty of Prince Edward County's South Shore.

Upcoming Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area Tours

Jan 18, Jan 19
Feb 22, Feb 23
1 PM to 4 PM

Join us for an easy winter walk on level groomed trails with stunning views. 🥾

Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area (PEP-NWA) is one of only 10 NWA across Canada open to the public, and it is open year-round.

There are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife as we move through a variety of habitats. We will wander through a hardwood forest and along the cliffs while we watch for signs of deer, grouse, weasel, and raccoon.

The scrub and grasslands are home to turkeys, coyotes, and rabbits. The shoreline offers possible sightings of mink, beaver, long-tailed ducks, and other waterfowl.

Winter birds like chickadees, woodpeckers, jays, and junco are plentiful and easy to spot.

The views in the NWA are spectacular, the wildlife abundant, and the peace and quiet are just what one needs to start the new year.

Click on the poster to see all available dates for upcoming PEP NWA tours, or click on your preferred date and RSVP. Our tour coordinator will get in touch with you closer to the tour date with details and transportation options.

Didn’t notice how dark and dreary the weather was until I looked at my photos because Cheryl Chapman captivated us with fascinating facts. I learned a LOT during the informative and awesome stroll...especially about “Mulleins” weirdly furry resilient plants that often pop up on my Athol property.

Lighthouses, a Fishery and a Canal: Adventures in County Marine History

Join two book authors and two editors who are creating a documentary archive and book, as they take us on their personal adventures in County marine history …

  • Historian and genealogist Dan Buchanan, who recently released the book, A History of the Murray Canal
  • Interviewers and editors Amy Bodman and Jane Macdonald, who are compiling South Shore Joint Initiative’s much-anticipated book, A Lifetime Upon These Waters: An Illustrated Oral History of Prince Edward County’s Vibrant Commercial Fishery, which continues the late Suzanne Pasternak’s documentation of South Shore commercial fishing families
  • Historian and publisher Marc Seguin, author of the definitive book on County lighthouses, For Want of a Lighthouse: Guiding Ships Through the Graveyard of Lake Ontario.

Water is a common thread for these researchers: Lake Ontario and its bays, which define most of the County’s boundary; and the dream and building of the Murray Canal to create a water highway across the isthmus. These authors and recorders of history will share their unique research paths in a talk and Q&A after each presentation. They will recount their challenges, changes in course, exciting discoveries, and generous help from local people along the way.

Richard Hughes, past president of the Hastings County Historical Society, will be our “navigator” for the talks, Q&As, and a lively panel discussion after the presentations.

Afterwards, mix and mingle with the presenters and enjoy refreshments. The authors’ books will be available for purchase.

This event is co-presented by the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario, Prince Edward County branch (ACO PEC), and the South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI).
